Thinking out loud, for clarity

Some of us have set up a "bits" blog on Bear Blog, while preserving longer posts on our own self-hosted, self-owned blogging platforms.

Here's why this doesn't work:

  • short-form content serves only four purposes:
  1. navel-gazing
  2. voyeurism
  3. social media brainrot engagement bait
  4. healthy human conversation
  • Bear Blog chooses not to include native comments. You can have them, but it's not "the thing to do" for very deliberate choices

  • when you only have a little burst to share, the dopamine you get from engagement is enough to pull it out of you. No dopamine? No drools

  • when you want your drivel to last longer, you prefer to own it

The benefits of Bear Blog:

  • "the best camera is the one you have with you": write moar
  • "less is better" for Forever Data: must lean into this
  • some really thoughtful design choices, e.g., speed, and how tags work
