Three stylized facts:

the social contract has failed young people (i.e., can't step onto the housing ladder). The only rational way out is to take long shots and lottery tickets

everyone else is doing it. It's stupid not to participate
Here^1 is a superbly written, full-throated rejection of "Be Dumber": because it's maladaptive, an overfit, and a cop-out. It mistakes the mask for the face.
However, I don't find this rejection to be completely convincing, yet.
We even see aspects of all-or-nothing, in every major sport:
